Refossileer Spotlight, Day 21 — John McIlveen

Already getting several remarks from readers, John McIlveen’s “Signs” is another that proved a challenge from which to select an excerpt. That even the chosen one is what it is should demonstrate something of the fun you’re in for!

Well last night it didn’t say Farmington 6 mi. a-tall, but it did say COCKSUCKER in big white letters, bright as all get-out. – “Signs” by John McIlveen

* What inspired your piece in The Refossiling?

JM: You really want to know this? It was inspired by a tongue-in-cheek (don’t go there!) debate I had with two friends about Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire, and which state had the worse case of “redneckism.” Yeah… I dun made that word up!

* Favorite / least favorite_______and why?

JM: I chose favorites

A. extinct or prehistoric lifeform

JM: T-Rex because he’s bad ass!

B. dinosaur-themed entertainment (book, movie, game, etc)

JM: Jurassic Park because it’s bad ass!

C. aquatic-themed entertainment (book, movie, game, etc)

JM: Jaws because he’s bad ass!

D. undersea or freshwater critter

JM: See (or sea) above ^

E. vacation destination

JM: Where the water’s salty, warm, and turquoise.

F. time travel destination

JM: Back to warn the younger me not to make such dumb-ass decisions – and probably suggest a few stocks to invest in.

G. seafood dish or delicacy

JM: Because I freakin’ love seafood in pretty much any form. I’d probably eat the Kraken if it were served.

* Where can readers and fans find more of your work?

JM: My short story collection INFLICTIONS and many more of my works are available on Amazon.

* Current ________ and why?

A. cause

JM: I will support anything anti-abuse, especially woman and children

B. obsession

JM: Boobies (oh c’mon! I’m being honest here!)

C. fandom

JM: WWW.CampNecon.com The convention – If you haven’t gone, you must!

D. crush

JM: Roberta Colasanti (always first) Christina Hendricks and Nigella Lawson, for their “assets”.

E. music

JM: YES (always) and Porcupine Tree

F. craving

JM: Seafood, whoopie pies

G. peeve

JM: People who bleed all over Facebook – “my life sucks because…,” etc.

* What’re you working on, what is your process/routine like?

JM: Two novels – GONE NORTH and CORRUPTION
I work full time at MIT and I have a twelve year old daughter (and four more daughters over twenty). My writing is accomplished at lunch, any fifteen-minute windows I find, and between 10-12 at night. I have the most supportive and understanding woman a man could wish for. This is key.

* Most useless advice you’ve ever seriously given or been given?

JM: Even bad advice is good advice if used in the proper way. “Scrub your dick across that cheese grater” can surely be put on the list of things you should not do.

* What kind of question do you always wish these questionnaires would ask, and how would you answer it?

JM: Q: Would you like a million dollars, no strings attached? A: Yes.
